Nerys's Guide to Italian Music - Elisa

Elisa represents a rarity of the Italian music industry - someone who is just as known more for singing in English than they are for singing in Italian. Her latest album, L'anima vola - her eighth album - is the first one to not only have an Italian title, but it's also the first album that she's released which is entirely in Italian.

Elisa was born Elisa Toffoli in Trieste in 1977. Her first album Pipes & Flowers was released in 1997, but the breakthrough was Sanremo in 2001. Her entry was her first song in Italian, Luce (tramonti a nord est). She was placed first in the festival and also won the Premio della critica (the critics' prize). The song also reached No.1 in the Italian singles chart.

The singles from her next album, Then Comes The Sun, were all in English. It was also during this period that Elisa had more visibility abroad. She sang the Italian national anthem during the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in 2002 (the following Winter Olympics were held in Turin), and a special greatest hits was released for the European market. In 2003 Elisa released a single in Italian, Almeno tu nell'universo, which was a cover of a song from 1989 originally sang by Mia Martini.  It reached No.1.

After four more English singles, the first song I ever heard of Elisa's during my Erasmus year was Una poesia anche per te which was released in 2005. Originally the song had been written in English and featured on her Pearl Days album, the Italian version was only featured on the second edition of the album.

I returned to Italy in the summer of 2007 and there was another song by Elisa during the rounds, this time in English. It was Stay, taken from her greatest hits collection Soundtrack '96-'06.

One of Elisa's most successful songs is her duet with Negramaro frontman Giuliano Sangiorgi. Ti vorrei sollevare was released in 2009 and was certified platinum with over 30,000 copies sold. It reached No.1 on both the download and radio airplay charts.

My favourite song by Elisa is Anche se non trovi le parole, which was released in January 2010. This followed Ti vorrei sollevare, and was also taken from her Heart album. And like the previous single it also reached No.1 in the Italian radio airplay chart.

One of Elisa's songs from last year is also one of her biggest successes. The title track from her L'anima vola album reached No.2 and was certified platinum.
